Michael is an attorney who was first introduced to Dereka almost a decade ago by his husband, Jake, a native of Lincoln, Rhode Island. Michael practices in the area of labor and employment law at a firm in Boston. Prior to entering private practice, he served as a judicial law clerk at the Massachusetts Appeals Court. He attended Tufts University and Boston University School of Law. Dereka’s personal journey and indelible personality have long been a source of great inspiration to Michael, and he is honored to join the Dereka Crosby Foundation’s Board of Directors to lend his support to furthering the foundation’s critical work on behalf of vulnerable populations.

Ron is a retired Sales Executive now serving as a job & life skills coach Paraprofessional working with 18-22 year old Special Education transition students. His propensity for helping people leaves him wanting to promote social justice and dignity for our most vulnerable population. Sandra is a licensed clinical social worker who has spent her career supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. She has worked for a number of agencies throughout Rhode Island. Sandra first met Barbara and Dereka when Dereka was in elementary school and receiving home based services through the Department of Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals. Most recently Sandra provided counseling services at Day One, an agency that provides counseling and supports to victims of sexual assault. She was one of two therapist who were familiar with victims who have intellectual disabilities. She will soon be opening her own private practice. Sandra has long recognized that many of the current programs and services for individuals with intellectual disabilities are isolating and not tailored to individual needs. Sandra is eager to find a way to help our vulnerable populations have decreased risk and find ways to help them communicate their needs. Sean is currently a third- year law student at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI; he will graduate in May and then sit for his bar exam. It is his hope to clerk for one of Rhode Island’s courts. Sean is also in his second term as a member of the Smithfield School Committee and currently is serving as its Chair. As he gains law experience, he hopes to advocate for individuals with intellectual disabilities. As the older brother of Ryan, Sean has seen first- hand the challenges facing individuals with intellectual disabilities. Sean has served as direct support staff for Ryan and Dereka. His observations, insight and understanding of the legal system will help to move the Foundation forward to achieve it’s goals.

Barbara has been a pediatric nurse for 35 years. Her mother had told her that if she became a nurse she could marry a doctor and work part-time. That plan never materialized and Barbara realized if she wanted a child, she would have to buy one. The extraordinary daughter she purchased came with something extra, a 21st chromosome. Who knew they could have this much fun together? Barbara’s belief is that we should all have something that we are passionate about and that puts us in service to others. Life is bigger than each of us individually. To that end, Barbara has been encouraged and inspired by the families that she has had the privilege of serving for over 30 years in Special Olympics and in her job as a nurse. It was Barb’s desire to leave a legacy in her daughter’s name that compelled her to found The Dereka Crosby Foundation. When she adopted Dereka she was told: “I’m only charging $2000 for her so someone will take her. If you keep her, New Hampshire will refund your fee. I’m not going to make any money off this one, it’s going to cost me money.” The need to change a horrible statistic that has existed for at least the 20 years that Dereka and Barbara have been a family and a desperate yearning to have something positive come out of their personal trauma has led to a new direction for the foundation. Raising awareness, educating the public, obtaining justice for victims, deterring perpetrators, and arming people with intellectual disabilities with the tools they need to tell has become her passion.

Dereka is a 2009 graduate of Lincoln High School. While attending high school, she successfully completed an entrepreneurship class that included a class project that would eventually become The Dereka Crosby Foundation, a non-profit organization, which presented over $4000 in scholarships to worthy high school graduates over the course of five years. Dereka raised most of these funds herself selling handmade jewelry and stitched items. These items were created in a fully integrated environment with folks with and without intellectual disabilities. Dereka learned her sewing skills under the tutelage of seamstress Andrea Riccio. Dereka also holds a first- degree brown belt in karate. She notably completed an eight- week course in basic care of a car at New England Institute of Technology. Dereka is one of the founding athletes of the North Stars Special Olympics team and trains and competes in golf, basketball, track and field, swim, duckpin bowling and powerlifting. She has twice appeared in the Special Olympics RI fashion show. Dereka currently serves on the North Star Athlete Leadership Council. A graduate of Christian Brothers University in Memphis, he first honed his skills and knowledge of sales, marketing and branding at MManTec. Inc of Atlanta, GA. For the next nine years John served as the Director of Marketing at Source Technology based in Waltham MA. John is committed to providing outstanding customer service, a quality he teaches to all his employees. John first met Barbara over ten years ago when she was searching for a new vendor for uniforms for her Special Olympic team, the North Stars. As their customer – vendor relationship developed, Barbara asked if Dereka could visit Impact weekly to gain real life work experience. John did not hesitate to say yes, and today Dereka holds the distinction of having the longest tenure at Impact. Victoria Fonseca is a Registered Nurse specializing in medically complex pediatric patients. She is wife to Diamantino, an engineer, and they have 4 adult children, and 3 grandchildren. Victoria also enjoys the great privilege of being godmother to the beautiful and delightful Dereka Crosby. In addition to her passion for nursing, Victoria was the proprietor of Revival and Tea at The Belvedere, an upscale gift store and European style tea room in Bristol for 7 years. Over the last 10 years, missions work and project development with Manna Group of Ministries in India has further strengthened her sense of social justice and compassion for underserved and vulnerable populations. It is this desire to protect and serve the marginalized populations that brings her to participate in the new vision of The Dereka Crosby Foundation. Chris started his commitment to individuals with intellectual disabilities as support staff at one of the many centers in RI providing day services to these individuals. At the start of his career, Chris recognized that there must be a better way to integrate folks into their communities, so for the last thirty years he has been Director of Programs for Special Olympics RI. Chris is committed to building more opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities and has been instrumental in bringing over 3500 athletes to the program. Chris will tell you that one of his greatest joys is creating new opportunities for athletes whether through a new program, a new athlete or a new team. Chris supported the start of Unified Sports in schools throughout Rhode Island, a major step in creating unified communities. Chris has known Barbara for the last thirty years as she has volunteered with Special Olympics RI. He has also been a source of steadfast support for Barbara and Dereka, and is dedicated to keeping all athletes free of abuse.

Jake Pitochelli currently works in the field of Biopharmaceutical Consulting and Staffing. Jake is also a proud graduate of Suffolk University. Growing up on Parker Street in Lincoln, Jake had the pleasure of being Barbara and Dereka’s neighbor. Over the years, Jake and Dereka formed a special friendship both in and out of school. Jake was the first recipient of the Dereka Crosby scholarship and was an original member of the board of directors for Dereka’s Delight. He now re-joins the committee to bring his savvy social media skills to promote the awareness of, and resources for, sexual assault against victims in vulnerable communities. Jake has always recognized the value and strength that Dereka possesses and is passionate about sharing her story with others in hopes to inspire people, just as Dereka has inspired Jake.

Andrea Riccio is a self-employed seamstress who enjoys being creative and loves her family and those she considers family which includes Barbara and Dereka Crosby, both whom she has known since Dereka came home to Barbara. Andrea hates change and has lived in the same house her entire life. She loves music, hates crowds, and tends to be anxious and shy and has deep empathy for people who share these traits. Andrea has a pet bird and a dog that she adores. She hates what happened to Dereka and the people who did it to her. She would do anything for Dereka and Barbara and that dedication fuels her participation in the Dereka Crosby Foundation. Arleen Sherman is a musician, educator, consultant and arts entrepreneur. She has more than three decades of teaching experience and has carved out a niche that combines teaching, creativity, and therapeutic techniques, integrating music into the lives of people of all ages and all abilities Arleen graduated with a degree in Arts and Human Development from Lesley College and a Master’s Certification in Music Education and Autism from Boston Conservatory at Berklee. She presently teaches piano in her private practice and is the Head of the Daytime Moon Creations theater program at the Berklee Institute for Arts Education and Special Needs in Boston. Dereka has been a part of Arleen’s life for fifteen years. Together, they have played piano and explored other instruments, and they continue to utilize creative expression with music and art weekly. Arleen has a deep passion and commitment to education, people with special needs, and to the healing power of arts. She also has a unique perspective from years of working in the field of sexual abuse. She has observed how Dereka’s strength, as well as her amazing spirit and love for the arts, has continued to help her each step of the way on her journey. Arleen would like to help educate others, and continue to support Dereka’s dreams.
